Saeed bin Basheer narrates: He asked Qatadah about Zihar, so Qatadah informed: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me: Sayyiduna Aws bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) performed Zihar with his wife Khuwaylah bint Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with her). This woman complained about this to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: "He has performed Zihar with me at a time when I have grown old and my bones have become weak." So Allah Almighty revealed the verse regarding Zihar. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Aws (may Allah be pleased with him): "Free a slave." He replied: "I do not have the means for that." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Then fast for two consecutive months." He replied: "My condition is such that if I am unable to eat for a day (at any time), my eyesight is affected (i.e., it becomes weaker)." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Then feed sixty needy people." He replied: "I do not have the means for that either, but if you help me and act with kindness, then I can do so." The narrator states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave him fifteen saa' as assistance, until Allah Almighty gathered it for him, and Allah is Most Merciful. The narrator says: People used to think that this was the amount according to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), because this grain was for sixty needy people.
