Ubaidah narrates: A man and a woman came to the service of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and there were some people with them. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed two people as arbitrators, he said: "Wait now, let me tell you what is obligatory upon you. Do you know what is obligatory upon you? It is obligatory upon you that if you both deem it appropriate for this husband and wife to remain together, then you should decide for them to remain together. If you both deem it appropriate that they should be separated, then you should separate them." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to the woman and said: "Will you be pleased with whatever decision these two make?" The woman replied: "Yes, I am pleased with the decision of Allah's Book regarding what is imposed upon me and what I will receive." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to the man and said: "Will you be pleased with whatever decision these two arbitrators make?" He replied: "No, if they decide for us to remain together, then I am pleased, but if they decide for separation, then I will not be pleased." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have spoken wrongly. By Allah! You must also be pleased in the same way as this woman is pleased."
