Qabeesah bin Dhu’aib reports: It was asked from Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) about two such sisters who are in someone’s possession, so Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I will neither guide you nor prohibit you, because one verse makes them lawful and one verse makes them unlawful.” That questioner left from there, and he met a companion. The narrator named Mu’ammar stated: I think he was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he asked: “What did you ask Sayyiduna Uthman about?” That person told him about his question and also about his answer, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “I will prohibit you, and if I have any (governmental authority) over you and then you commit it, I will punish you.”
