Qadi Shurayh narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me (the command of Allah, the Exalted, is): "The person in whose hand is the knot of marriage." I asked: Is what is meant by this the guardian (wali) of the woman? So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, what is meant by this is the husband.
