Amr bin Shu'aib narrates from his father, from his grandfather: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding continuous (absence), due to which there was a fear of harm to his wife. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote back to him: "Give him a respite of one year; if he recovers, then fine, otherwise separation should be effected between him and his wife."
