نَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، قَالا : نَا أَبُو الأَشْعَثِ ، نَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَجَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تُعْرِضُ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَخَفَضَ فِيهَا الْبَصَرَ وَرَفَعَهُ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّهَا ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ " زَوِّجْنِيهَا ، قَالَ : هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ؟ ، قَالَ : مَا عِنْدِي مِنْ شَيْءٍ ، قَالَ : وَلا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ ؟ ، قَالَ : وَلا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ ، وَلَكِنْ أَشُقُّ بُرْدَتِي هَذِهِ فَأُعْطِيهَا النِّصْفَ وَآخُذُ النِّصْفَ ، قَالَ : لا ، قَالَ : هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ ؟ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ " ،.
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were present with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when a woman came to him and offered herself for marriage. The Prophet (peace be upon him) lowered his gaze, then raised it, but did not give a positive response. One of the companions said: “O Messenger of Allah! Marry her to me.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “Do you have anything (to give as a dowry)?” He replied: “I have nothing.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “Not even an iron ring?” He replied: “Not even an iron ring, but I will divide my garment into two parts, give her one half, and keep the other half for myself.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “No.” Then he asked: “Do you know any portion of the Qur’an (by heart)?” He replied: “Yes.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Go, I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur’an (as a dowry by teaching it to her).”
