Sayyiduna Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates regarding the statement of Allah: “So do not prevent them from marrying their (former) husbands, if they agree with each other in a proper manner (to remarry).” Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ma’qil bin Yasar al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me: This verse was revealed about him. He had married his sister to a man. That man divorced the woman, until her waiting period (‘iddah) was over. Then that man sent a proposal to remarry her. So I said to him: I married (my sister) to you, made her your wife, honored you, and you divorced her. Now you have come again with a marriage proposal. No! By Allah, you will never get her again. Sayyiduna Ma’qil (may Allah be pleased with him) says: There was no other fault in that man, and the woman also wanted to remarry him. So Allah revealed this verse. (Sayyiduna Ma’qil [may Allah be pleased with him] narrates) I said: O Messenger of Allah! Now I will do as commanded. Then I married the woman to that man. ‘Abbad bin Rashid narrated similarly from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him). Sa’id narrated from Qatadah, from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), from Sayyiduna Ma’qil (may Allah be pleased with him).
