Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a man to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who had stolen his cloak. (The Prophet, peace be upon him, gave the verdict of punishment.) So he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Count it (the cloak) as a gift from me to him (and do not give this punishment)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not do this before bringing him to us?"
