Faraafsa Hanafi narrates: Some people were passing by with a thief along with them, near Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) told them to let him go. So those people said: "O Abu Abdullah! Are you interceding for a thief?" He replied: "There is no harm in it, as long as the matter has not been presented before the judge. When it is presented before the judge, then Allah will not forgive him, even if the judge forgives him."
