Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was sleeping in the mosque on my cloak, the price of which was thirty dirhams. A man came and took it from beneath me (and tried to steal it). He was caught and brought before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered that his hand be cut off. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "Will you cut off his hand because of thirty dirhams? I sell it to him and make its price a debt (i.e., I will take it later)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Why did you not do this before bringing him to me?"
