Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman bin Azhar narrates from his father: A man who had drunk alcohol was brought before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) was at that time in Hunain. He threw dust on the man's face and ordered his companions to beat the man with their shoes and whatever they had in their hands, until (after a while) the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to them: "Now stop." So they stopped. This remained the method of punishing the drinker until the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him). After that, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes as punishment for drinking alcohol. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes in the early part of his caliphate and started giving eighty lashes in the later part. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) gave both types of punishments during his caliphate, but Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) maintained the punishment of eighty lashes during his caliphate.
