Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, he stood among the people to deliver a sermon. After praising and glorifying Allah, he said: “Indeed, Allah did not allow the elephants to enter Makkah, but He granted authority over it to His Messenger and the believers. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, and it has been made lawful for me only for a specific portion of the day, and after me, it will not be lawful for anyone. The game of this place is not to be chased away, its trees are not to be cut, and its fallen items are not to be picked up, except by one who announces it. If someone’s relative is killed, he has the choice of two things: either he is paid blood money, or (as retribution) the killer is killed.” Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Allow us to cut the idhkhir (a type of grass), for we use it in our houses and graves.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Idhkhir is allowed.” A man named Abu Shah, who was from Yemen, said: “O Messenger of Allah! Write this down for me.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Write it down for Abu Shah.” The narrator named Walid says: I asked Imam Awza’i: What is meant by his statement, ‘Write this down for me’? He replied: It means the sermon which he had heard from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
