Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Some companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by an Arab tribe, among whom a man had been bitten (by a poisonous creature). They said: "Does anyone among you know how to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing)?" So one of those companions went and performed ruqyah on the chief, on the condition that sheep would be given. Then he brought those sheep to his companions, and they asked: "With what did you perform ruqyah?" He replied: "I performed ruqyah with Surah Al-Fatihah." The companions said: "You have taken compensation for Allah's Book?" They did not take anything from what was given to them as compensation. When these people came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), they informed him: "O Messenger of Allah! He has taken compensation for Allah's Book." That companion also informed the Prophet (peace be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! We passed by an Arab tribe, among whom a man had been bitten (by a poisonous creature). I went and recited Allah's Book over him as ruqyah on the condition of receiving sheep as compensation, and he was cured." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The most deserving thing for which you take compensation is Allah's Book." This hadith is authentic; Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it from Abu Ma'shar on the authority of Ibn Mudharib.
