Abd Khair narrates: One day, after performing the Fajr prayer, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and sat in the open field. Then he instructed his servant: "Bring water for ablution!" The servant brought water in a vessel and also brought a basin. We were watching Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); he took the vessel with his right hand and poured water onto his left hand, then he washed both his hands. Then, holding the vessel with his right hand, he poured water onto his left hand and washed his hands. He did this three times. The narrator named Abd Khair states: Each time, he did not put his hand inside the vessel, but rather poured water from the vessel and washed both hands three times. After that, he put his right hand into the vessel and (taking water) rinsed his mouth and put water into his nose. He cleaned his nose from inside with his left hand, and did this three times. Then he put his right hand into the vessel and washed his face three times. After that, he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, and his left arm up to the elbow three times. Then he put his right hand into the vessel until his hand was filled with water, then he lifted it along with the water and wiped his head once with both hands, passing his left hand over it. Then, with his right hand, he poured water three times over his right foot and washed it three times with his left hand. With his right hand, he poured water three times over his left foot and washed it with his left hand as well. Then he put his right hand into the vessel, filled his palm with some water, and drank it. Then he said: "This is the way of ablution of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Whoever wishes to see the way of ablution of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this is his way." Some narrators have reported some words of this narration with slight additions or omissions, but all their meanings are close to each other and are authentically established.
