Abdullah bin Ka'b narrates from his father: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) passed by him while he was entangled with one of his debtors. He said, "O Messenger of Allah! This is my debtor." So the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "Will you not do this, that is, take half from him?" He indicated this with his blessed hand. So I said, "Yes! O Messenger of Allah!" Then he took half and forgave half. (The narrator is in doubt whether the word in the narration is "half" or "shatr" [portion].)
