The narrator named Harithah reports: Some people from Syria came to the service of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). They said: We have acquired some wealth, which consists of horses and slaves. We wish that zakat be taken from these as well, so that they may be purified. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will do something which my two predecessors did not do." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) consulted the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is fine, as long as it is not considered a jizya, which continues to be taken from them after you."
