Hadith 1996

Sayyiduna Qabisah bin Mukhariq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I had a payment to make, so I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek help from him regarding it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "We will make the payment on your behalf and will take it out from the camels of charity." (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said) "When the camels of charity arrive." Then he said: "O Qabisah! Asking (for charity) is forbidden, except for three people: One is the person who has a payment to make; for him, asking is permissible until he pays off the debt, and then he should stop. The second is the person who is afflicted with severe need and hunger, until three wise men from his people testify (here the narrator is in doubt, perhaps the word is) and state that he has been afflicted with such hunger and need; for such a person, asking is also permissible until he becomes capable of fulfilling his needs. And the third is the person who is struck by a calamity that destroys his wealth; for such a person, asking is also permissible until he becomes capable of fulfilling his needs, and then he should stop. Anything taken by asking beyond this is unlawful."
