Abu Qilabah says: I met Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated this hadith to me: We used to live in a place where water was available and it was a passageway for people. Riders would pass by us, and we would ask them about this matter and inquire about the behavior of the people. They would tell us that there is a man who says he is a Prophet and Allah Almighty has sent him, and Allah Almighty has revealed such and such words to him. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I kept remembering those words and they became firmly established in my heart. The common Arabs had linked accepting Islam with the conquest of Makkah. They used to say: Observe this Prophet and his people; if he prevails over his people, then he is a true Prophet. When the news of the conquest of Makkah reached us, every tribe hastened to accept Islam. My father was also among those who went with his tribe to accept Islam. They presented themselves before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and stayed with him for some time. When they returned from the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we went to meet them. When he saw us, he said: "By Allah! I am coming to you from the true Messenger of Allah. He has commanded you regarding this matter. He has said: You must perform the prayer at this time in this manner, and at this time in this manner, and at this time in this manner. When the time for prayer comes, one of you should give the adhan, and the one who knows the most Qur'an among you should lead the prayer." When the people investigated in our tribe, there was no one who knew more Qur'an than me, so they put me forward. At that time, I was six or seven years old. I had a sheet which was small; when I went into prostration, it would move aside. So a woman from the tribe said: "Why don't you cover the back of your reciter?" Then the people of the tribe had a shirt sewn for me, made from Bahraini cloth. I was happier at receiving that shirt than at anything else.
