الْوِتْرُ بِخَمْسٍ أَوْ بِثَلَاثٍ أَوْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ أَوْ بِأَكْثَرَ مِنْ خَمْسٍWitr with five, three, one, or more than five rak'ahs

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي الثَّلْجِ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ الْوَرْدِ ، ثنا أبِي ، ثنا عَدِيُّ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، عَنْ مَعْمَرِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِخَمْسٍ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِثَلاثٍ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ إِلا أَنْ يُومِئَ فَلْيُومِئْ " . هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ عَدِيُّ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ مُسْنِدًا ، وَوَقَفَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ ، وَوَقَفَهُ أَيْضًا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، وَاخْتُلِفَ عَنْهُ هُوَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ .
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Witr is a duty; whoever wishes may perform five witr, whoever wishes may perform three rak‘ahs, and whoever wishes may perform one rak‘ah of witr, and whoever is only able to gesture, then let him gesture." According to one chain of narration, this narration is transmitted as marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet), while according to other chains, it is mawquf (stopped at the Companion).
