بَابُ الْإِمَامِ يَسْبِقُ الْمَأْمُومِينَ بِبَعْضِ الصَّلَاةِ فَيَدْخُلُ مَعَهُمْ مِنْ حِينَ أَدْرَكَهُ وَيَكُونُ أَوَّلَ صَلَاتِهِChapter on the imam preceding the followers in some of the prayer, joining him from when they catch up, and that being the start of their prayer

حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، ثنا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " مَا أَدْرَكْتَ مَعَ الإِمَامِ فَهُوَ أَوَّلُ صَلاتِكَ ، وَاقْضِ مَا سَبَقَكَ بِهِ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ " . قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، مثل قَوْلِ عَلِيٍّ.
Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "Whatever part of the prayer you catch with the Imam, that will be your beginning of the prayer, and whatever recitation has already passed, you should complete it afterwards." Sa'id bin al-Musayyib also holds the same opinion as Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
