بَابُ صِفَةِ السَّهْوِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَأَحْكَامِهِ وَاخْتِلَافِ الرِّوَايَاتِ فِي ذَلِكَ وَأَنَّهُ لَا يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ شَيْءٌ يَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِChapter on the description of forgetfulness in prayer, its rulings, differences in narrations, and that nothing passing in front of one praying invalidates the prayer

حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الرَّهَاوِيُّ ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، ثنا عَمَّارُ بْنُ مَطَرٍ ، ثنا ابْنُ ثَوْبَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا سَهَى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الثِّنْتَيْنِ أَوِ الْوَاحِدَةِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا وَاحِدَةً ، وَإِذَا شَكَّ فِي الثِّنْتَيْنِ أَوِ الثَّلاثِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا اثْنَتَيْنِ ، وَإِذَا شَكَّ فِي الثَّلاثِ أَوِ الأَرْبَعِ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا ثَلاثًا ، ثُمَّ لِيُتِمَّ مَا بَقِيَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْوَهْمُ فِي الزِّيَادَةِ ، وَلا يَكُونَ فِي النُّقْصَانِ ، ثُمَّ يَسْجُدُ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person makes a mistake regarding whether he has prayed two or one rak‘ah, he should consider it as one. And when he is in doubt about whether he has prayed two or three, he should consider them as two. And when he is in doubt about whether he has prayed three or four, he should consider them as three, and then complete the remaining prayer, until he becomes more inclined towards having done more (i.e., excess), not less. After that, when he is sitting (i.e., reciting Tashahhud), at that time he should perform two prostrations (i.e., Sajdah Sahw)."
