Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: “Will recitation (of Qur’an) be done in every prayer?” He replied: “Yes!” Then a man from among the Ansar said: “So it has become obligatory.” (The narrator says) The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed me, as I was sitting closest to him among those present, and said: “When the imam is leading the people in prayer, his recitation is sufficient for those people.” The narrator has transmitted it in this way, however, the narrator named Zaid made a mistake in it. (The correct version of the previous narration is this:) Sayyiduna Abu Darda stated: “I think that the imam’s recitation is sufficient for all those people.”
