Chapter: The saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "The imam is appointed to be followed."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ التَّغْلِبِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ ، وَجَمَاعَةٌ ، قَالُوا : ثنا غَسَّانُ . ح وَقُرِئَ عَلَى أَبِي مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَاعِدٍ ، وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ حَدَّثَكُمْ عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ التَّغْلِبِيُّ ، قَالا : غَسَّانُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَقْرَأُ خَلْفَ الإِمَامِ أَوْ أُنْصِتُ ؟ قَالَ : " بَلْ أَنْصِتْ فَإِنَّهُ يَكْفِيكَ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ غَسَّانُ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ ، وَقَيْسٌ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ ضَعِيفَانِ ، وَالْمُرْسَلُ الَّذِي قَبْلَهُ أَصَحُّ مِنْهُ . وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ.
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: "Should I recite (Qur'an) behind the Imam or should I remain silent?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should remain silent, that will be sufficient for you." In narrating this tradition, the narrator named Ghassan is unique, and he is weak, while the other two narrators of this narration, Qais and Muhammad bin Salim, are also weak. The previously mentioned 'mursal' narration is more authentic than this. And Allah knows best.
