Chapter: The saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "The imam is appointed to be followed."

قُرِئَ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ حَدَّثَكُمْ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، ثنا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا ، وَإِذَا قَرَأَ فَأَنْصِتُوا " . تَابَعَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الأَشْهَلِيُّ.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Imam has been appointed so that he may be followed; when he says the takbir, you should also say the takbir, and when he recites (Qur'an), you should remain silent."
