Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Among the people, there are some who are given faith but not the Qur'an, and among them are some who are given the Qur'an but not faith, and some are given both the Qur'an and faith, and some are given neither faith nor the Qur'an. Then, giving their example, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The one who is given faith but not the Qur'an is like a date whose taste is sweet but has no fragrance, and the one who is given the Qur'an but not faith is like medicine whose smell is good but its taste is bitter, and the one who is given both the Qur'an and faith is like an orange (sweet lemon) whose fragrance is good and its taste is also good, and the one who is given neither the Qur'an nor faith is like colocynth whose taste is bitter and has no fragrance.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the believer who recites the Noble Qur'an is like that of an orange, whose taste is delicious and whose fragrance is excellent. And the example of the believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of a date, whose taste is good but it has no fragrance. And the example of the hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is like that of basil (a flower), whose fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the example of the hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of colocynth, whose taste is bitter and it has no fragrance."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The example of one who has been given faith but not the Qur’an is like a date, whose taste is delicious but it has no fragrance. And the example of one who has been given the Qur’an but not faith is like basil, whose fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the example of one who has been given both the Qur’an and faith is like an orange, whose taste is delicious and its fragrance is excellent. And the example of one who has been given neither the Qur’an nor faith is like colocynth, whose smell is foul and its taste is also bad.
