Chapter on righteousness and sin
Hadith 2824
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ هُوَ: ابْنُ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ جَابِرٍ الْقَاضِي، عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ، فَقَالَ: "الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَعْلَمَهُ النَّاسُ" .
Sayyiduna Nawwas bin Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about virtue and sin (evil), so he (peace be upon him) said: "Virtue is good character, and sin is that which troubles your heart and you dislike that people become aware of it."
Hadith 2825
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ عِيسَى، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ عِيسَى، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ بِنَحْوِهِ.
With this chain also, the aforementioned hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Nawas bin Sam'an, may Allah be pleased with him.
