Chapter on replying to greetings
Hadith 2675
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ هُوَ: ابْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ، قَالَ: صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ حِينَ قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ، فَكُنْتُ أَوَّلَ مَنْ حَيَّا بِتَحِيَّةِ الْإِسْلَامِ . قَالَ: "عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ، مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ ؟". قَالَ: قُلْتُ: مِنْ غِفَارٍ . قَالَ: فَأَهْوَى بِيَدِهِ . قُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي: كَرِهَ أَنِّي انْتَمَيْتُ إِلَى غِفَارٍ.
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer. When he had finished the prayer, I came to him and I was the first person to greet him with the Islamic greeting. He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “Wa alaikas-salam wa rahmatullah. Which tribe are you from?” I said: From Ghifar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand (or lowered it). I thought to myself: Perhaps he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not like my affiliation with Ghifar.
