Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the verse about "usury" was revealed at the end of Surah Al-Baqarah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and recited it to the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Then he prohibited the trade of alcohol.

Hadith 2607
Abdur Rahman bin Wa'lah said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the skin of a dead animal, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When it is tanned, it becomes purified." And I asked him (Ibn Abbas) about buying and selling wine with the people under protection (dhimmis), so he (Ibn Abbas) said: A man from the tribe of Banu Thaqif or Daws presented a wineskin to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Pilgrimage. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu So-and-so! Do you not know that Allah Almighty has forbidden wine?" He replied: "No, by Allah, I did not know." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then know that Allah Almighty has forbidden it." So the man turned to his servant and said: "Go, take it to Huzurah (a place name) and sell it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu So-and-so! Do you not know that the One who has forbidden its drinking has also forbidden its selling?" The narrator said: So he ordered, and the wineskin was poured out in the open field.
