Chapter: Granting a Quarter at the Start and a Third on Return
Hadith 2518
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاق الْفَزَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ"إِذَا أَغَارَ فِي أَرْضِ الْعَدُوِّ، نَفَّلَ الرُّبُعَ، وَإِذَا أَقْبَلَ رَاجِعًا، وَكُلُّ النَّاسِ، نَفَّلَ الثُّلُثَ".
Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attacked the enemy’s land, he would give a quarter of the spoils of war as a reward, and when all the people returned (and there was a need for battle again), he would give a third of the spoils of war as a reward.
