Sayyiduna Salamah bin Sakhr Bayazi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to have intercourse with my wives so frequently that perhaps no one else did so as much. When the blessed month of Ramadan arrived, I feared that I might do something with my wife that would not leave its ill effect until morning. Therefore, I pronounced zihar (i.e., said to her, "You are like my mother to me") until the end of Ramadan, to keep away from her. During this period, one night she was serving me when her body became exposed, and I could not restrain myself and I had intercourse with her. When morning came, I went to my tribe and narrated this incident and said, "Come with me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." They said, "By Allah, we will not go with you. Who knows, something might be revealed in the Qur'an about you, or the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) might say something about you that would be a disgrace for us. Therefore, we hand you over for your own fault." So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him my story. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Did you do that?" I replied, "Such an act has occurred from me." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Did you do that?" I replied, "Yes, I am guilty of it." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Salamah! Did this act occur from you?" I replied, "Yes, such an act has occurred from me, and O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I am present and patient upon Allah's command, so whatever Allah's command is, decide about me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then free a slave." Sayyiduna Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I struck my hand on my neck and said, "By Him Who sent you with the truth, I do not own any neck except this one." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates." I said, "By Him Who sent you with the truth, we spent the last night without eating anything (i.e., we are so needy, so how can we feed the poor and needy)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go to the one who collects charity from Banu Zurayq, he will give you something. Feed sixty poor people from it, and whatever remains, eat it yourself and feed your family." Sayyiduna Salamah bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went to my tribe and said to them, "I found constriction and bad opinion with you, whereas with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) I found ease and good opinion, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered me to give charity to you."
