Hadith 2255
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never struck any servant, nor did he ever strike anyone else with his own hand, except when he was fighting in the way of Allah (i.e., in jihad and on the battlefield he confronted and struck the enemy).
Hadith 2256
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Dhibab رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Do not beat Allah’s maidservants” (meaning wives). Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه came and submitted to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم: (Because of this command) women have become bold towards their husbands (i.e., they have started being insolent and mischievous). Upon this, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم permitted them to beat their wives. Then many women gathered at the house of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, complaining about their husbands. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Many women are coming to the wives of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم with complaints about their husbands. Those men (i.e., those who beat their wives) are not good.”
Hadith 2257
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and advised the people regarding women. He (peace be upon him) said: "What is the matter with a man that he beats his wife like a slave, yet at the end of the same day he goes to sleep with her (or will do so)?"
