Chapter: The Wedding Feast (Walima)
Hadith 2101
أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، وَرَأَى عَلَيْهِ وَضَرًا مِنْ صُفْرَةٍ: "مَهْيَمْ ؟"قَالَ: تَزَوَّجْتُ، قَالَ: "أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a trace of yellow color on Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: "What is this yellow color?" He replied: "I have gotten married." The Prophet said: "(Then) give a wedding feast, even if it is with only one goat."
Hadith 2102
أَخْبَرَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ الثَّقَفِيِّ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ ثَقِيفَ أَعْوَرَ، قَالَ: كَانَ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَعْرُوفٌ: أَيْ يُثْنَى عَلَيْهِ خَيْرٌ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ اسْمُهُ زُهَيْرَ بْنَ عُثْمَانَ، فَلَا أَدْرِي مَا اسْمُهُ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: "الْوَلِيمَةُ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ حَقٌّ، وَالثَّانِيَ مَعْرُوفٌ، وَالثَّالِثَ سُمْعَةٌ وَرِيَاءٌ" . قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: وَحَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، أَنَّهُ دُعِيَ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ فَأَجَابَ، وَدُعِيَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّانِيَ فَأَجَابَ، وَدُعِيَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّالِثَ فَحَصَبَ الرَّسُولَ وَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ، وَقَالَ: "أَهْلُ سُمْعَةٍ وَرِيَاءٍ".
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Uthman Thaqafi. A blind man from Thaqif, who was known among people for his goodness, said—his name was Zuhair bin Uthman, and if it was not this name, then I do not know what his name was. He said that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The food of the wedding feast (walimah) is necessary on the first day, better on the second day (that is, one should invite and accept the invitation), and the walimah on the third day is for show and ostentation." Qatadah said: A person told me that Sa'id bin al-Musayyib was invited on the first day and he accepted, he also accepted the invitation on the second day, but he did not accept the invitation on the third day and said that these people are seeking fame and show.
Hadith 2103
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: "شَرُّ الطَّعَامِ طَعَامُ الْوَلِيمَةِ، يُدْعَى إِلَيْهِ الْأَغْنِيَاءُ، وَيُتْرَكُ الْمَسَاكِينُ، وَمَنْ تَرَكَ الدَّعْوَةَ، فَقَدْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ".
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The worst food is the food of the wedding feast (walimah) to which the rich are invited and the poor are left out, and whoever does not accept the invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.
Hadith 2104
أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ قَدْ صَنَعَ طَعَامًا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، هَكَذَا وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ بِيَدِهِ، قَالَ: يَقُولُ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: هَكَذَا، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ، قَالَ: لَا، فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ الثَّانِيَةَ: وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ الثَّالِثَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "وَهَذِهِ ؟"قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَانْطَلَقَ مَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَعَائِشَةُ فَأَكَلَا مِنْ طَعَامِهِ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man prepared food and came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). With a gesture of his hand, he submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Please come for food. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also gestured towards Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), asking: Will she come with me? He said: (There is not enough space). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention away from him. He again gestured to invite the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet again gestured towards Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He gave the same reply, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) again turned his attention away from him. That man, for the third time, gestured to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to come, so the Prophet again gestured towards Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he said: Take her along as well. Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) both went with him and ate from his spread.
Hadith 2105
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ، وَكَانَ لَهُ غُلَامٌ لَحَّامٌ، فَقَالَ: اصْنَعْ لِي طَعَامًا أَدْعُو رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ . قَالَ: فَدَعَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ، فَتَبِعَهُمْ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِنَّكَ دَعَوْتَنَا خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ، وَهَذَا رَجُلٌ قَدْ تَبِعَنِي، فَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَذِنْتَ لَهُ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ تَرَكْتَهُ" . قَالَ: فَأَذِنَ لَهُ.
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A companion whose kunyah was Abu Shu’aib said to his servant, who was a butcher, “Prepare food for me that will suffice for five people, for I wish to invite the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” So he invited the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and four companions to come with him. Another companion also joined along with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You invited us along with four men, and this person has also joined us. Either give him permission (to eat) or, if you wish, you may send him back.” The narrator said: He also gave him permission (to enter and eat).
