Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was passing with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) through one of the streets of Madinah, when suddenly we saw some boys who were (tying up a chicken and) using it as a target. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Who has done this? They all ran away in different directions. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who mutilates an animal.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade tying up a living animal and then killing it. Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Even if that animal is a chicken, I will not tie it up and kill it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade al-mujaththama. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: al-mujaththama refers to al-masbura, that is, to strike a tied animal with an arrow, bullet, or stone.
