2 hadith
Hadith 1888
Abu Ja’far al-Sadiq, may Allah have mercy on him, said: We went to the service of our master Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, and he asked about some people until when he inquired about me, I said: I am Muhammad, the son of Ali bin al-Husayn bin Ali. He leaned towards me and opened the upper and lower buttons of my shirt with his hand and placed his mouth on my chest (i.e., kissed me). At that time, I was a young man and he had become blind. Then he said: Welcome, O my nephew, ask whatever you wish. So I asked him questions, then the time for prayer came. He stood up wrapped in a cloth so small that if he put it on both shoulders, it would fall off one shoulder, and his sheet was placed on his tripod. In this state, he performed the prayer. (Afterwards) I said: Tell me the method of the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He indicated nine with his fingers and said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed in Madinah for nine years and did not perform Hajj. Then, in the tenth year, it was announced that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was going for Hajj. So, many people came to Madinah, all wishing to follow the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and to perform Hajj as he did. Then we all set out with him until we reached Dhu’l-Hulayfah. There, Muhammad bin Abi Bakr was born to Lady Asma bint Umays, may Allah be pleased with her (the wife of our master Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him). She sent word to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: What should I do now? He said: “Take a bath, tie a cloth as a loincloth, and enter into Ihram.” Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed in the mosque (of Dhu’l-Hulayfah), then mounted Qaswa (his she-camel) until when it stood at the place of Bayda, as far as my eye could see, there was a multitude of riders and pedestrians to the right, left, front, and behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he was among us. The Qur’an was being revealed to him, he understood its meanings and acted upon them. He proclaimed the words of Tawheed «لَبَّيْكَ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ “I am present, O Allah, I am present, I am present, You have no partner, I am present, all praise and blessings are Yours, and the kingdom is Yours, You have no partner.” And the people also proclaimed the Talbiyah, and whatever they proclaimed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not forbid them, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, continued to proclaim the Talbiyah until we reached the Sacred House of Allah. Our master Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said: We had only intended Hajj and did not even know about Umrah. When we reached the House of Allah with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he kissed the Black Stone, then in three circuits of Tawaf he performed Raml (i.e., walked briskly), and in four circuits he walked at a normal pace. Then he came to the Station of Ibrahim and prayed (the two rak’ahs of Tawaf) and recited: «وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى» i.e., “Take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.” So the Station of Ibrahim was between him and the Ka’bah. Ja’far said: My father used to say, I do not know whether he narrated this from our master Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, as a marfu’ (directly from the Prophet) or not, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite in the two rak’ahs «قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ» and «قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ». Then he came to the Black Stone and kissed it, then exited through the gate of Safa, and when he reached near Safa, he recited: «إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ ، اَبْدَأُ بِمَا بَدَأَ اللّٰهُ بِهِ» i.e., “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” We begin (Sa’i) with that which Allah mentioned first, i.e., from the hill of Safa. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began Sa’i from Safa, and he ascended it until he could see the Ka’bah, then he said Allahu Akbar and proclaimed the oneness of Allah and said: «لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِيْ وَيُمِيْتُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْئٍ قَدِيْرُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ، وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ، وَهَزَمَ الْأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ i.e., “Allah is One, there is no true deity except Him, He has no partner, the kingdom is His and all praise is His, He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent. There is no true deity except Him, He is alone, He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and alone defeated the confederates.” He said this three times and made supplication in between. Then he descended towards Marwah, and when his feet reached the low part of the valley, the Imam al-Darimi, may Allah have mercy on him, said, he performed Raml (i.e., ran), then after leaving the valley, he walked at a normal pace until he reached Marwah (the hill), and did there as he had done at Safa and recited as he had recited. And when the last circuit ended at Marwah, he said: If I had known before what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me and would have performed Umrah first. But whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him exit Ihram and make his Hajj an Umrah. At that time, our master Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju’sham, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Is this command, i.e., to change Hajj into Umrah, only for this year or is it forever? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, interlaced the fingers of one hand into the fingers of the other hand and said twice: Umrah has entered into Hajj forever in this way. And our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, came from Yemen bringing camels for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and saw that Lady Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, had exited Ihram, put on colored clothes, and applied kohl, all of which are forbidden in Ihram. He disliked this. Lady Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: My father, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, had ordered this. Our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to complain about what Lady Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, had done and to seek a ruling about what she had mentioned from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and that I had expressed dislike for her action. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Fatimah has spoken the truth. And what intention did you make when you entered Ihram?” Our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I said, O Allah, I intend (enter into Ihram) with the same intention as Your Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I have the sacrificial animal with me, so do not exit Ihram.” Our master Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The camels that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, brought from Madinah for sacrifice and those that our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, brought from Yemen, all together made one hundred camels. So all the people became halal, i.e., exited Ihram and cut their hair, except the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and those who had brought the sacrificial animal with them. When the Day of Tarwiyah (8th Dhu’l-Hijjah) came, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned towards Mina and we entered into Ihram for Hajj, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, rode to Mina and there he prayed Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr, and stayed there for a short while until the sun rose. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered a tent to be pitched in the valley of Namirah, which was made of hair. Then he rode towards Arafat. The Quraysh had no doubt that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would stay at al-Mash’ar al-Haram in Muzdalifah as they (the Quraysh) used to do in the time of ignorance. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by it and reached Arafat, did not stop in Muzdalifah, and found a tent pitched in the valley of Namirah (which is near Arafat), and he entered it. When the sun had declined, he ordered that Qaswa, his she-camel, be brought, it was saddled, and he mounted it and came into the valley and addressed the people, saying: “Your lives and your wealth are sacred to you as the sanctity of this day, this month, and this city. Listen! Every matter of ignorance is trampled under my feet (i.e., is null and void), and all blood feuds of the time of ignorance are remitted (i.e., there is neither retaliation nor blood money for them), and the first blood I remit from the blood feuds of the area is the blood of Rabi’ah bin al-Harith (who was your cousin), who was being suckled among Banu Sa’d and was killed. The tribe of Hudhayl killed him. And all usury of the time of ignorance is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is the usury of my uncle Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, for usury is completely abolished. Fear Allah regarding women, i.e., fulfill their rights according to the Shari’ah, for you have taken them into your trust by the name of Allah, and have made their private parts lawful for you by the word of Allah. And your right over them is that they do not allow anyone you dislike to enter your beds, i.e., do not allow anyone into your house without your permission. If they do so, you may strike them, but not so severely as to break a bone or cause a serious wound. And their right over you is that you provide them with food and clothing in a reasonable manner. And on the Day of Resurrection, you will be asked about me, so what will you say?” They said: We bear witness that you have conveyed the message of Allah, fulfilled it, and advised us. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his forefinger towards the sky, then pointed it towards the people and said: O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness. Then our master Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, gave the call to prayer once and the Iqamah, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed Zuhr, then he prayed Asr, and between the two prayers he did not pray any other prayer (i.e., no Sunnah or Nafl). Then he mounted Qaswa and came to the plain of Arafat, and made his she-camel face the rocks. Isma’il said: towards the trees. And Habl Mashat is the name of the place, he faced it and turned his face towards the Qiblah and stood there until sunset, until the sun had set and the yellow color had disappeared and the disk of the sun had gone. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seated our master Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him, behind him and returned to Muzdalifah, and pulled the reins of his she-camel so tightly that its head touched the saddle, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured with his right hand to the people: “O people! Go slowly, go slowly.” When he reached a height, he loosened the reins a little so that it could climb, until he reached Muzdalifah, and there he prayed Maghrib and Isha combined with one call to prayer and two Takbirs, then he lay down until dawn broke. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed Fajr with one call to prayer and one Iqamah, then mounted Qaswa and came to al-Mash’ar al-Haram and stopped there, faced the Qiblah, supplicated to Allah, proclaimed Takbir and Tahleel, and declared the oneness of Allah until it became very bright, and before the sun rose, he departed from there and now seated our master Fadl bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, behind him, who was a handsome, fair-skinned man with beautiful hair. As he left, women were sitting in howdahs, and our master Fadl, may Allah be pleased with him, began to look at those women. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placed his hand on his face, then Fadl turned his face to the other side, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placed his blessed hand on that side as well, until he reached the valley of Muhassir, then he urged the she-camel (i.e., made it go faster), then took the middle road which leads to Jamrat al-Aqabah. Then he came to that Jamrah where there was a tree and threw seven pebbles at it, saying Allahu Akbar with each pebble, and each pebble was such that it could be held between the fingers (the size of a chickpea or broad bean), and he threw the pebbles from inside the valley. Then he returned from there to the place of sacrifice and with his own hand slaughtered sixty-three camels, then gave the remainder to our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, to slaughter, and included him in his sacrificial animals. Then he ordered that a piece of meat be taken from each camel, and all were cooked in one pot, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, ate from it and drank its broth. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mounted and proceeded towards the House of Allah, reached Makkah, and prayed Zuhr there. Then he came to the sons of Abdul Muttalib who were giving water to the people at Zamzam. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “O sons of Abdul Muttalib! Draw water. If I did not fear that people would overpower you in your task of giving water, I would have drawn water with you.” (i.e., if I draw water, others will also rush to do this good deed). They drew a bucket for him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, drank from it.
