Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed, “Those who have the ability to fast but do not, should pay the fidyah of feeding a poor person,” [بقرة: 184/2] then among us, whoever wished would not fast and would give the fidyah, until this command was revealed «فَمَنْشَهِدَمِنْكُمُالشَّهْرَفَلْيَصُمْهُ» that is, “Whoever witnesses the month of Ramadan should fast,” [البقرة: 185/2] and the previous option (of not fasting) was abrogated.
