Chapter: On the tashahhud
Hadith 1377
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْنَا: السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى إِسْرَافِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ . قَالَ: فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: "إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى هُوَ السَّلَامُ، فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، فَقُولُوا: التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، فَإِنَّكُمْ إِذَا قُلْتُمُوهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، ثُمَّ لِيَتَخَيَّرْ مَا شَاءَ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would say: Peace be upon Allah before His servants, peace be upon Jibreel and Mika'il, peace be upon Israfil, peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: "Allah Himself is As-Salam (the Source of Peace), (so why do you send peace upon Him?), when you sit in prayer (for Tashahhud), then say: «التحيات لله ........... إلى وعلی عباد الله الصالحين» meaning: 'All verbal and physical acts of worship (or all words of respect and glorification), all acts of worship (prayers, etc.), and all the best praises and charities are for Allah alone. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah.' When you say this, your greeting will reach every righteous servant of Allah in the heavens and the earth, wherever they may be. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Then after this, let him supplicate for whatever he wishes."
Hadith 1378
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ حُرٍّ، حَدَّثَنِي الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مُخَيْمِرَةَ، قَالَ: أَخَذَ عَلْقَمَةُ بِيَدِي فَحَدَّثَنِي، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ، وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فَعَلَّمَهُ التَّشَهُّدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ: "التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَوَاتُ، وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ: أُرَاهُ قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ" . أَيْضًا شَكَّ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الْكَلِمَتَيْنِ: إِذَا فَعَلْتَ هَذَا أَوْ قَضَيْتَ، فَقَدْ قَضَيْتَ صَلَاتَكَ، إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقُومَ، فَقُمْ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَقْعُدَ، فَاقْعُدْ.
Qasim bin Mukhaimara narrated that Alqama held my hand and narrated a hadith to me that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) held his hand and said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) held Abdullah's hand and taught him how to recite the Tashahhud in prayer, and «(اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ ........... إِلَى الصَّالِحِيْن)» Zuhair said: I think he made him memorize it up to « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُوْلُهُ », he became doubtful in the two testimonies. Then he said: When you have done or said so, then complete your prayer, and if you wish to stand up, then stand up, and if you wish to remain seated, then remain seated.
