Hadith 615
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Discuss hadith, for one hadith reminds of another hadith.
Hadith 616
The above-mentioned narration of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri رضي الله عنه through another chain of transmission.
Hadith 617
Abu Nadrah reports that Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Discuss hadith, for one hadith reminds you of another hadith.
Hadith 618
Abu Nadrah narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), and there is more speech in this regard.
Hadith 620
Abu Salamah narrates from Abu Nadrah, who reports the same statement from Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id (may Allah be pleased with him), and in it there is more discussion than that.
Hadith 621
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: قَالَ لِي طَاوُسٌ: "اذْهَبْ بِنَا نُجَالِسْ النَّاسَ".
It is narrated from Amr bin Muslim that Imam Tawus, may Allah have mercy on him, said to me: Take us to the people, we will sit with them (i.e., for the discussion of hadith).
Hadith 622
It is narrated from Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Repeat the hadith so that you do not forget, because hadith is not compiled and preserved like the Qur'an. If you do not review it, you will forget it. Also, none of you should say, "I narrated the hadith yesterday, so I will not narrate it today." Rather, even if you narrated the hadith yesterday, narrate it today as well, and narrate it tomorrow too.
Hadith 623
It is also narrated from Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him), that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Repeat and memorize the hadith; if you do not memorize it, you will forget it. And after narrating a hadith, no person should say, "I have narrated it once," because the one who heard the hadith before will have an increase in knowledge, and the one who has not heard it will now hear it.
Hadith 624
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، قَالَ: "تَذَاكَرُوا، فَإِنَّ إِحْيَاءَ الْحَدِيثِ مُذَاكَرَتُهُ".
It is narrated from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad that Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila said: Engage in discussion; the way to keep the hadith alive is to repeat and discuss it.
Hadith 625
أَخْبَرَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ: "تَذَاكَرُوا الْحَدِيثَ، فَإِنَّ ذِكْرَهُ حَيَاتُهُ".
It is narrated from Ibrahim that Alqamah said: Discuss the hadith, for remembering it is its life.
Hadith 626
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: "كَانَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ يُحَدِّثُ الْأَعْرَابَ".
It is narrated from Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah: Ziyad bin Sa’d said: Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri used to narrate hadith to the villagers as well.
Hadith 627
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، قَالَ: "كَانَ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ رَجَاءٍ يَجْمَعُ صِبْيَانَ الْكُتَّابِ يُحَدِّثُهُمْ يَتَحَفَّظُ بِذَاكَ".
A’mash (Sulaiman bin Mehran) said: Ismail bin Raja used to gather the children of scribes and narrate hadith to them, and they would memorize it in this manner.
Hadith 628
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الشَّقَرِيِّ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: "حَدِّثْ حَدِيثَكَ مَنْ يَشْتَهِيهِ، وَمَنْ لَا يَشْتَهِيهِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَصِيرُ عِنْدَكَ كَأَنَّهُ إِمَامٌ تَقْرَؤُهُ".
It is narrated from Abu Abdullah Al-Shaqari that Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Relate your hadith to everyone, whether they desire to listen to it or not, because they will become your source, as if you are reading from the original source."
Hadith 629
It is narrated from Ata (ibn Abi Rabah): Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When you hear a hadith from us, then discuss it among yourselves.
Hadith 630
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ هُشَيْمٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ، قَالَ: "كُنَّا نَأْتِي الْحَسَنَ، فَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ، تَذَاكَرْنَا بَيْنَنَا".
Hashim said: Yunus bin Ubaid informed that we used to go to Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him), and when we would return from him, we would discuss among ourselves.
Hadith 631
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When any of you wishes to narrate a hadith, he should repeat that hadith three times.
Hadith 632
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، قَالَ: "إِحْيَاءُ الْحَدِيثِ مُذَاكَرَتُهُ"، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ: "يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ، كَمْ مِنْ حَدِيثٍ أَحْيَيْتَهُ فِي صَدْرِي كَانَ قَدْ مَاتَ".
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila said: The way to keep a hadith alive is to discuss it. Abdullah bin Shaddad said to him: May Allah have mercy on you, how many ahadith had disappeared, and you revived them in my heart.
Hadith 633
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: "كَانَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْعُكْلِيُّ، وَابْنُ شُبْرُمَةَ، وَالْقَعْقَاعُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، وَمُغِيرَةُ إِذَا صَلَّوْا الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ، جَلَسُوا فِي الْفِقْهِ، فَلَمْ يُفَرِّقْ بَيْنَهُمْ إِلَّا أَذَانُ الصُّبْحِ".
Muhammad bin Fudayl narrated, his father said: Harith bin Yazid Al-Ukli, Ibn Shubruma, and Qaqa’ bin Yazid and Mughira, when they had performed the ‘Isha prayer, would sit for (discussion of) fiqh, and only the call to the morning prayer would separate them.
Hadith 634
أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ شَرِيكًا ذَكَرَ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، وَطَاوُسٍ، وَمُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ: عَنْ اثْنَيْنِ مِنْهُمْ "لَا بَأْسَ بِالسَّمَرِ فِي الْفِقْهِ".
Malik bin Ismail reported that I heard Shareek say, he narrated from Laith, two among Ata, Tawus, and Mujahid said: There is no harm in staying awake at night for jurisprudential matters.
Hadith 635
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ السَّلَامِ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ: "لَا بَأْسَ بِالسَّمَرِ فِي الْفِقْهِ".
It is narrated from Laith that Mujahid said: There is no harm in staying awake for a jurisprudential discussion.
Hadith 636
It is narrated from Ibn Jurayj that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: An hour spent studying together is better than worshipping the whole night.
Hadith 637
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، عَنْ هُشَيْمٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، قَالَ: "كُنَّا نَأْتِي جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ تَذَاكَرْنَا، فَكَانَ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ أَحْفَظَنَا لِحَدِيثِهِ".
Ata said: We used to go to Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them), and when we would return from him, we would discuss among ourselves. Also, Abu az-Zubair was the most memorizing of hadith among us.
Hadith 638
أَخْبَرَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ اللَّيْثَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ، يَقُولُ: "تَذَاكَرَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ لَيْلَةً بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ حَدِيثًا وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ مُتَوَضِّئًا، قَالَ: فَمَا زَالَ ذَلِكَ مَجْلِسَهُ حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ"، قَالَ مَرْوَانُ: "جَعَلَ يَتَذَاكَرُ الْحَدِيثَ".
Marwan bin Muhammad reported that I heard from Laith bin Sa'd, he said: Ibn Shihab (Zuhri) was sitting one night after 'Isha making ablution, when he began to recall hadith, then he sat and kept recalling them until morning came. Marwan said: He kept discussing hadith.
Hadith 639
It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ishaq, Zuhri said: Whenever I met Ubaidullah bin Utbah, it felt as if I had split the sea.
Hadith 640
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: "كَانَ الْحَارِثُ الْعُكْلِيُّ وَأَصْحَابُهُ يَتَجَالَسُونَ بِاللَّيْلِ، وَيَذْكُرُونَ الْفِقْهَ".
Uthman bin Abdullah said: Harith Akli and his companions used to sit at night and memorize jurisprudential issues.
Hadith 641
It is narrated from Abu Al-Ahwas that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Memorize hadith, for its life is in remembering or discussing it.
Hadith 642
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا
أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا
الْمَسْعُودِيُّ، عَنْ
عَوْنٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ
عَبْدُ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ لِأَصْحَابِهِ حِينَ قَدِمُوا عَلَيْهِ: هَلْ تَجَالَسُونَ ؟، قَالُوا: لَيْسَ نُتْرَكُ ذَاكَ، قَالَ: فَهَلْ تَزَاوَرُونَ ؟، قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ مِنَّا لَيَفْقِدُ أَخَاهُ، فَيَمْشِي فِي طَلَبِهِ إِلَى أَقْصَى الْكُوفَةِ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهُ، قَالَ:
"فَإِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَزَالُوا بِخَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ".
It is narrated from Awn bin Abdullah that the students of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him, so he said to them: "Do you hold gatherings?" They replied: "We never abandon it." He asked: "Do you visit one another?" They replied: "Yes, O Abu Abdur Rahman! If any one of us does not see his companion, he goes to the farthest edge of Kufa to see him." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As long as you continue to do so, you will remain in goodness."
Hadith 643
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: "آفَةُ الْعِلْمِ النِّسْيَانُ، وَتَرْكُ الْمُذَاكَرَةِ".
It is narrated from Imam Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The calamity of knowledge is forgetfulness and abandoning discussion.
Hadith 644
It is narrated from Qasim bin Abdur Rahman Masoodi that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The calamity of Hadith is forgetfulness (i.e., to forget it).
Hadith 645
It is narrated from Hakim bin Jabir that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Every thing has a calamity, and the calamity of knowledge is forgetfulness.
Hadith 646
It is narrated from A’mash that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The calamity of knowledge is forgetfulness, and its loss is that you teach it to one who is unworthy.”
Hadith 647
أَخْبَرَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو حَمْزَةَ الثُّمَالِيُّ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ: "غَائِلَةُ الْعِلْمِ النِّسْيَانُ".
It is narrated from Abu Hamzah al-Tammar that Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The evil of knowledge is forgetfulness.
Hadith 648
It is narrated from Ibn Buraida that Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Memorize (repeat) this (knowledge of) hadith, visit one another, for if you do not do so, this (knowledge) will disappear.
Hadith 649
أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ: "كُنْتُ أَحْسَبُ بِأَنِّي أَصَبْتُ مِنْ الْعِلْمِ، فَجَالَسْتُ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ، فَكَأَنِّي كُنْتُ فِي شِعْبٍ مِنْ الشِّعَابِ".
It is narrated from Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I used to think that I had completed knowledge, but when I kept the company of Ubaidullah (bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud), I realized that I was only in one of the many valleys or ravines of knowledge (i.e., compared to him, my knowledge was very little).
