It is narrated from Abdul A'la that Imam Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, entered the market. He bargained with a man over the price of a cloth, so the man said: "For you, it is for such-and-such (price); by Allah, if it were anyone other than you, I would not give it at this price." Imam Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Why did you do that?" After that, he was not seen buying or selling in the market until he met Allah, the Exalted.
It is narrated from Ubaid bin Al-Hasan that Mus'ab bin Zubair distributed some wealth among the reciters of Kufa at the beginning of Ramadan, and sent two thousand dirhams to Abdur Rahman bin Ma'qil and said: Take help from this wealth in this blessed month. But Abdur Rahman bin Ma'qil returned those dirhams and said: We do not recite the Qur'an for this (worldly gain).
Ubaidullah bin Umar narrated that Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him): Who are the people of knowledge? He replied: Those who act according to their knowledge. He asked: What thing removes knowledge from the hearts of people? He replied: Greed.
It is narrated from Salamah bin Wahram that Imam Tawus, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Knowledge has not been taken away from anything like forbearance is taken away from a bag.
