Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I sought knowledge and did not find it anywhere more than with the Ansar, so I used to go to a man and inquire about him. I would be told that he was sleeping, so I would make my cloak a pillow and then lie down. When he would come out at the time of Zuhr, he would say: O cousin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! How long have you been here? I would reply: I have been sitting here for quite a while. He would say: You did not do well; why did you not inform me (of your arrival)? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I found most of the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this neighborhood of the Ansar. By Allah, I would go to one of their men and it would be said that he is sleeping. If I wished, he could have been awakened for me, but I would let him sleep until he came out by himself, and in this way I would learn the hadith from him properly.
Abu Salamah (bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf) said: If I had kept the company of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), I would have acquired a great deal of knowledge from him.
Hadith Takhrij
Imam Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When I would go to the door of Urwah bin Zubair, I would remain seated there due to his grandeur and respect, even though if I wished, I could have entered (inside) as well.
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I said to a man from the Ansar: O brother! Come, let us ask the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), today they are present in great numbers. He replied: O son of Abbas! What a strange thing you say! Do you think that people will be in need of you while so many companions of the Messenger are present? So he left it, and I turned my attention to asking questions. Whenever a hadith reached me, I would go to him (that Ansari brother), he would be taking a midday nap, I would make a pillow of my cloak at his door, dust would cover my face from the wind, he would come out and see me and say: O son of the uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why have you come? You could have sent for me, I would have come. I would say: No, I am more in need to come to you myself. Then I would ask him about that hadith. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: That (Ansari companion) lived for a long time until he saw people gathering around me, and he said: This young man was more intelligent than me.
Abdullah bin Buraidah said: One of the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) went to Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him), who was in Egypt. When he reached him, Sayyiduna Fadala (may Allah be pleased with him) was giving water to his she-camel. He said: Welcome. That person said: I have not come to visit you, but I and you heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I hope you remember it? He said: What is it? He said: This and this hadith.
