Hadith 123
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا
مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا
حَمَّادُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمِنْقَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي
أَبِي، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ يَوْمًا إِلَى
ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ لَا أَدْرِي مَا هُوَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ:
"لَا تَسْأَلْ عَمَّا لَمْ يَكُنْ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَلْعَنُ مَنْ سَأَلَ عَمَّا لَمْ يَكُنْ".
Hammad bin Yazid narrated from his father that one day a man came to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and asked him about something of which I have no knowledge. So Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Do not ask about something that has not occurred. I heard Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) curse the person who asks about things that have not (yet) happened."
Hadith 124
Imam Zuhri said that it has reached us that when Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about something, he would ask: "Has this incident occurred?" If the answer was yes, he would narrate a hadith or express his opinion, and if the people's answer was "no," he would say, "Let it be, ask when it occurs."
Hadith 125
Aamir said that a question was asked to Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) about a certain issue, so he asked, "Has this actually occurred?" The people replied, "No." So Ammar said, "Leave us until it actually happens, and if that incident does occur, then we will bear the hardship of investigating the matter for you."
Hadith 126
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، حَدَّثَنَا
سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ
عَمْرٍو، عَنْ
طَاوُسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ
عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ:
"أُحَرِّجُ بِاللَّهِ عَلَى رَجُلٍ سَأَلَ عَمَّا لَمْ يَكُنْ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ بَيَّنَ مَا هُوَ كَائِنٌ".
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said from the pulpit: I consider the person who asks about hypothetical issues to be sinful, because Allah Almighty has already explained that which is going to occur.
Hadith 127
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا
عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ،، حَدَّثَنَا
ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ
عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ
سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ
ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ:
"مَا رَأَيْتُ قَوْمًا كَانُوا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، مَا سَأَلُوهُ إِلَّا عَنْ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ مَسْأَلَةً حَتَّى قُبِضَ، كُلُّهُنَّ، فِي الْقُرْآنِ مِنْهُنَّ، يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ سورة البقرة آية 217، وَ وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِيضِ سورة البقرة آية 222، قَالَ: مَا كَانُوا يَسْأَلُونَ إِلَّا عَمَّا يَنْفَعُهُمْ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I have not seen people better than the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and throughout the entire life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), they only asked him thirteen questions, all of which are mentioned in the Noble Qur’an, such as: «﴿يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ ...﴾» (Al-Baqarah: 2/217) “They ask you about the sacred month,” «﴿وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِيضِ ...﴾» (Al-Baqarah: 2/222) “They ask you about menstruation.” He also stated that the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would only ask those questions and issues which were beneficial to them.
Hadith 128
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا
عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أَخْبَرَنَا
ابْنُ عَوْنٍ , عَنْ
عُمَيْرِ بْنِ إِسْحَاق، قَالَ:
"لَمَنْ أَدْرَكْتُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّنْ سَبَقَنِي مِنْهُمْ، فَمَا رَأَيْتُ قَوْمًا أَيْسَرَ سِيرَةً، وَلَا أَقَلَّ تَشْدِيدًا مِنْهُمْ".
Umar bin Ishaq said: Among the people before me, I found the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, to be the most. I have not seen anyone with a more easygoing nature and less harshness than them.
Hadith 129
Raja bin Haywah said: I heard from ‘Ubadah bin Nusay al-Kindi, he was asked about a woman who died among some people and had no guardian present. He said: I found a group who neither acted harshly like you nor asked questions like you do.
Hadith 130
أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، أَخْبَرَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي رَجَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي خَالِدُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الْقُرَشِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ ابْنِ مُحَيْرِيزٍ، بِمَرْجِ الدِّيبَاجِ فَرَأَيْتُ مِنْهُ خَلْوَةً، فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ، فَقَالَ لِي: مَا تَصْنَعُ بِالْمَسَائِلِ ؟، قُلْتُ: "لَوْلَا الْمَسَائِلُ، لَذَهَبَ الْعِلْمُ، قَالَ: "لَا تَقُلْ ذَهَبَ الْعِلْمُ، إِنَّهُ لَا يَذْهَبُ الْعِلْمُ مَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ، وَلَكِنْ لَوْ قُلْتَ: يَذْهَبُ الْفِقْهُ".
Hisham bin Muslim Qurashi said: I was with Ibn Muhairiz in the valley of Marj al-Deebaj. Finding him alone, I asked him about an issue. He said: Why do you ask about issues? I said: If there were no issues, knowledge would vanish. He replied: Do not say that knowledge would vanish. As long as the Noble Qur'an is recited, knowledge will not vanish. Yes, you may say that understanding and comprehension will be taken away.
Hadith 131
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا
سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا
حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ
دَاوُدَ، عَنْ
الشَّعْبِيِّ، أَنَّ
عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّا لَا نَدْرِي،
"لَعَلَّنَا نَأْمُرُكُمْ بِأَشْيَاءَ لَا تَحِلُّ لَكُمْ، وَلَعَلَّنَا نُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَشْيَاءَ هِيَ لَكُمْ حَلَالٌ، إِنَّ آخِرَ مَا نَزَلَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ آيَةُ الرِّبَا، وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يُبَيِّنْهَا لَنَا حَتَّى مَاتَ، فَدَعُوا مَا يَرِيبُكُمْ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكُمْ".
It is narrated from Imam Sha'bi that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! We do not know, it may be that we command you regarding matters which are not permissible for you, and it may be that we declare things forbidden for you which are actually lawful for you. The last verse revealed in the Noble Qur'an was about usury, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not explain it to us in detail before he passed away. Therefore, leave that which you are doubtful about, and adopt that which you have no doubt about (act upon it).
