Hadith 96
Sayyiduna ‘Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer, then he gave us a very effective admonition, due to which eyes were filled with tears and hearts trembled. A man said, “This is the sermon of someone bidding farewell, so please advise us.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I advise you to fear Allah and to listen and obey (i.e., to listen to the leader and act upon his command), even if (the leader) is an Abyssinian slave. Whoever among you lives after me will see much disagreement, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the way of the rightly guided Caliphs, cling to it with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters (in religion), for every innovation is misguidance.” Abu ‘Asim once said: «إِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُوْرِ» that is, beware of new matters, for every innovation is misguidance.
Hadith 97
Imam Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Our predecessors used to say that following the Sunnah is a means of salvation, and knowledge will rapidly diminish. The survival of knowledge is the survival of religion and the world, and with the disappearance of knowledge, everything will disappear.
Hadith 98
Abdullah al-Daylami said: It has reached us that the first decline of the religion will be due to the abandonment of the Sunnah. The religion will be taken away, one Sunnah at a time, just as a rope is untied, knot by knot.
Hadith 99
Hassan bin Atiyyah said: Whenever a people introduce an innovation into their religion, Allah removes from them a similar Sunnah, and He will never return that Sunnah to them until the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith 100
Abu Qilabah said: Whoever invents a bid'ah (innovation), he has made the sword (killing) lawful. (That is, he is deserving of execution.)
Hadith 101
Abu Qilabah said: Those who follow desires are misguided; in my opinion, their abode is nothing but Hell. As an example, observe that whoever adopted any (new) statement or matter, his affair reached to killing. Indeed, there are many forms of hypocrisy. Then he recited these verses: "Among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely give charity and be among the righteous." (__QUR_9:75__)
"And among them are those who criticize you concerning the (distribution of) charities. If they are given some of it, they are pleased, but if they are not given any, at once they become angry." (__QUR_9:58__)
"And among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, 'He is (all) ear.' Say, 'It is an ear of goodness for you.'" (__QUR_9:61__)
So, they differed in their words and gathered upon doubt and denial. Their statements are different, and they deserve to be killed. I do not think their abode is anything but Hell. Hammad said: Then Ayyub, mentioning this hadith, said: By Allah, he (i.e., Abu Qilabah) was among the very intelligent, understanding jurists.
