Hadith 68
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat what was given as a gift, but would not accept charity. A Jewish woman from Khaybar presented a roasted, poisoned goat as a gift. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Bishr bin Al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) ate some of it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand and said: "This goat has informed me that it has been poisoned." As a result, Sayyiduna Bishr bin Al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away due to its effect. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for the woman and asked: "Why did you do this?" The woman replied: "If you are a (true) Prophet, it will not harm you, and if you are a king, we will be relieved of you." During his final illness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "I still feel the effect and pain from the meat I ate at Khaybar, and now the time has come for my artery to burst."

It is narrated from Imam Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him, that Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, used to relate that a Jewish woman from Khaybar presented a roasted goat laced with poison as a gift to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He took its foreleg and ate some of the meat, and some of his companions who were with him also ate. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them: "(Now) stop your hands," and he called for the woman and asked her: "Did you put poison in this goat?" She replied, "Yes, but who informed you?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This foreleg (the meat of the hand) in my hand itself told me." She said: "Indeed, I did put poison." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: "Then what was your intention?" She replied: "I thought if you are a Prophet, the poison would not harm you, and if you are not a Prophet, we would be relieved of you." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forgave her for her crime and did not punish her. And some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who had eaten that meat, passed away. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had cupping done because of that poison. Abu Hind performed the cupping with a cow's horn and a knife (Abu Hind was a freed slave of the Ansar tribe Banu Bayadah).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): When Khaybar was conquered, a poisoned goat was gifted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Gather all the Jews who are here and bring them to me.” So they were all gathered before him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I am going to ask you something; will you answer me truthfully?” They said: Yes, O Abu al-Qasim! He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “Who is your ancestor?” They replied: So-and-so. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You have lied; your ancestor is so-and-so.” At this, they said: You have spoken the truth and said correctly. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: “If I ask you something else, will you tell me the truth?” They said: Yes, and even if we lie, you will catch our lie, just as you caught our lie about our ancestor. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: “Who are the people who will dwell in Hellfire?” They said: For a few days, we will remain in it, then you people will take our place. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You will remain in it in humiliation; by Allah, we will never take your place in it.” He (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: “If I ask you one more thing, will you tell me the truth?” They said: Yes (certainly). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Did you put poison in this goat?” They said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “What prompted you to do this?” They said: Our intention was that if you were a liar, we would be rid of you, and if you were a true Prophet, then it would not harm you.
