It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver sermons while leaning against the trunk of a tree. Then, when the pulpit was made (and he ascended it «كما فى رواية البخاري»), that trunk began to weep until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to it and placed his hand upon it.
Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated from his father: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) delivered the sermon, he would stand and remain standing for a long time, and this became difficult for him. So a date-palm trunk was brought, a pit was dug, and it was placed upright beside him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) delivered the sermon, he would stand for a long time leaning against it. A man who had come to Madinah, when he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) standing by that trunk, said to the person sitting next to him: "If I knew that Muhammad (peace be upon him) would praise me for something that would bring him comfort, I would make for him a seat on which he could stand, and he could sit on it as long as he wished and stand as long as he wished." When this was conveyed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said: "Bring him to me." So he was brought before the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him to make a pulpit of three or four steps, which is present in Madinah today. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) found comfort in it. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) moved away from that trunk and began to approach the thing (the pulpit) that had been made for him, the trunk became sad and began to cry with a thin sound like a she-camel. Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated from his father that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) heard the sound of the trunk crying, he returned to it, placed his blessed hand on it, and said: "If you wish, I will leave you planted where you are, and you will remain as you are. And if you wish, I will plant you in Paradise, and you will be watered by the rivers and springs of Paradise, your growth will be good, you will bear fruit, and the friends of Allah will eat your fruit." The narrator thinks that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say twice: "«نعم قد فعلت» All right, I will do that." The narrator asked, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "It chose that I plant it in Paradise."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that before the pulpit was built, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand leaning against a trunk. When the pulpit was made, that trunk began to weep until we heard its crying. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on it, and it became silent.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver sermons while leaning on a wooden post. When the pulpit was made and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat upon it, that piece of wood began to weep like a she-camel. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand upon it, and it became quiet.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the wood wept in such a manner as a she-camel cries when her calf is taken away from her.

Tufail narrated from his father, Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), that when the roof of the (Prophet's) Mosque was supported by trunks, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray beside a date-palm trunk and would lean on it while delivering the sermon. One of his companions said, "Shall we not make a place for you to sit, upon which you may stand so that people can see you and hear your sermon?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted it, so a pulpit with three steps was made, and it was placed where he ordered. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and proceeded towards the pulpit, passing by the trunk, it began to cry like a bull, bursting with sobs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on it, and it became quiet. He then proceeded to the pulpit. He used to pray beside that trunk, and when the Prophet's Mosque was renovated, Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) took the trunk, and it remained with him until it decayed, termites ate it, and it crumbled into pieces.

Hadith Takhrij
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering a sermon while leaning against a trunk, when a Roman man came to him and said, "Shall I make a pulpit for you on which you can stand and deliver the sermon?" So he made a pulpit for him, which you see today. The narrator said: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on that pulpit to deliver the sermon, the trunk began to weep like a young she-camel cries with a thin voice. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) descended and went to the trunk, embraced it, and it became quiet. He ordered that a pit be dug and it be buried.
Hadith Takhrij
Sa’iq narrated that I heard Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) say: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he used to deliver sermons with his (blessed) back leaning against a piece of wood. When the number of people increased, he thought that everyone should hear his voice, so he ordered, “Make something upon which I can stand.” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah! What kind of thing should we make?” He said, “Make a canopy like that of Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.” When that canopy was made, Hasan said: By Allah, that piece of wood wept. Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) also said: Glory be to Allah, can the hearts of a people be found who heard it? Abu Muhammad Imam Darimi said: That is, they heard that sound.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for the sermon on Friday, he would lean his back against a trunk in the mosque. A Roman man came to him and said, "Shall I make something for you on which, even if you are sitting, it will appear as if you are standing?" So he made a pulpit, on the first two steps of which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand, and on the third he would sit. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it, that trunk began to moan like a bull in the sorrow of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the mosque began to resound. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to it and embraced it, and it became silent. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, if I had not embraced it, it would have continued to cry in the separation of Allah's Messenger until the Day of Resurrection." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered and the trunk was buried.
