It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): Women experiencing postnatal bleeding will wait for approximately forty days.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 987 to 990)

From all these narrations, it becomes clear that the duration of nifas (postnatal bleeding) is forty days. During these days, she will abandon prayer just like a menstruating woman (ha’idh). This period can be less or more than forty days. According to some jurists (fuqaha), if the blood continues for more than forty days, she will wait up to fifty days. Some have said that after forty days, she is considered under the ruling of mustahadah (a woman experiencing irregular bleeding).
