Sayyiduna ‘Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away on a Monday, and his (blessed body) remained (in the house) during Monday day and night, and until Tuesday. He was buried on the night of Wednesday. (Some) people said: He has not died, rather his soul has been taken up (to the heavens) just as the soul of Musa (peace be upon him) was taken up. Thus, Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has not died, rather his soul has been taken up just as the soul of Musa was taken up to the heavens. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot die until he cuts off the hands and tongues of all these nations. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept speaking until, due to the intensity of his emotion, foam began to come from his mouth. Then Sayyiduna ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away. Indeed, he was a human and grew old, just as a human being grows old. O people! Bury your companion. He is greatly honored in the sight of Allah. Allah will not give him death twice. Will you all die once, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) die twice? (That is not possible.) He is indeed greatly honored and esteemed in the sight of Allah. O people! Bury your companion. And as you say (that he has not died), if it is as you say, then it is not difficult or hard for Allah that the earth itself would seek him out. By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away after having made the entire path clear, declaring the lawful as lawful and the unlawful as unlawful, marrying, divorcing, waging war, and making peace. No (shepherd) who tends goats, who takes his flock to the tops of mountains and knocks down leaves from trees with his staff for them, and takes them to the pond (water reservoir) for water—none among you will be more hardworking and toiling than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Get up, O people! Bury your companion. The narrator said: Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep. She was asked: Are you weeping over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: By Allah, I am not weeping over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Do I not know that he has gone to a place far better for him than this world? What makes me weep is that the revelation from the heavens has ceased. The narrator of the hadith, Hammad, said: When Ayyub reached this point, his voice became choked with tears.
