Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: An Ansari woman asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ritual bath after menstruation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Take water with lotus leaves, clean the place of blood thoroughly, then pour water over your head so that it reaches the roots of the hair (perform the bath in this way), then take a piece of cotton with musk applied to it and apply it.” She asked: O Messenger of Allah! How should I apply the cotton? He remained silent. She again asked: How should I apply the cotton? He again remained silent, so Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) whispered to her: Take a piece of cotton with musk applied to it and apply it to the place of blood. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this and did not object.
From this hadith, we learn the instruction not to be shy in religious matters, and we come to know of the intense modesty (haya) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. And why should it not be so, when the description of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in the earlier scriptures is that he is neither one who speaks nonsense nor one who is immodest, nor one who uses obscene language. Upon being asked repeatedly, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would only say "Subhan Allah" and remain silent.
In one narration, it is mentioned that Sayyida Aisha radi Allahu anha pulled that female companion towards herself and taught her the method, «صلى اللّٰه على نبينا وقدوتنا محمد بن عبداللّٰه وسلم تسليما كثيرا».
