It is narrated from Urwah bin Zubair and Amrah bint Abdul Rahman that the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), said that Lady Umm Habibah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), who was married to Abdul Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), suffered from the illness of istihada (non-menstrual bleeding) for seven years. She complained about this to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so he said: "This is not menstrual blood; it is blood from a vein. So when you have your menses, leave the prayer, and when the period of menstruation ends, perform ghusl (ritual bath) and pray." Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: So she would perform ghusl for every prayer and then pray, and she would sit in the tub or basin of her sister Zainab bint Jahsh, and the redness of the blood would float on top of the water.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 790)
Istihada is an illness in which blood continues to flow even after the period of menstruation (hayd) has ended and does not stop. Such a woman is called mustahada, and the ruling for her is that when the period of menstruation begins, she should leave off prayer, and when its duration ends, she should perform a ritual bath (ghusl) and then pray, because this blood is not menstrual blood.
