It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Muwayhibah (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for those buried in Baqi', so come with me." In the middle of the night, I went out with him, and when he stood by their graves, he said: "O inhabitants of the graves! Peace be upon you. The state you are in is better for you than that which people are now afflicted with (if only you knew what Allah has saved you from). Tribulations have erupted one after another like the dark patches of night, and each subsequent tribulation is worse than the previous one." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me and said: "Abu Muwayhibah! I have been given the keys to the treasures of the world and to live in it forever, or Paradise, and I have been given the choice between the world or meeting my Lord." I said: "May my parents be sacrificed for you! Take the treasures of the world and everlasting life in it, then choose Paradise." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, by Allah, O Abu Muwayhibah! No, I have chosen to meet my Lord." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for forgiveness for the people of Baqi' and returned. From that time, the pain began in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 78)
The following issues are understood from this hadith:
1. Affirmation of the Prophethood of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to receive commands from Allah Ta'ala. 2. In obedience to the divine command, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would leave his house in the middle of the night. 3. The manner of entering the graveyard: saying «السَّلَامُعَلَيْكُمْيَاأَهْلَالْمَقَابِرِ». 4. Mentioning the reality of the day and time is not objectionable. 5. The greatness of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was granted the treasures of the world and eternity, but he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam preferred to meet the Lord of Majesty. 6. The legitimacy of supplicating for forgiveness (du'a al-istighfar) for the deceased is established from this hadith, and so on.
