Hadith 789

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you wakes up from sleep, he should wash his hand three times before putting it into water."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 786 to 789)

In the narration of Sahih Bukhari, it is stated: None of you knows where his hand was during the night.
A similar mention is found in Sahih Muslim as well.
Therefore, it is necessary to wash the hand three times.
Allamah Waheed al-Zaman rahimahullah said: Here, the restriction of "night" is incidental; whenever one wakes up from sleep during the day as well, the same ruling applies—that one should not put the hand into the vessel without washing it. And this prohibition is of a tanzihi (discouraged, but not sinful) nature.
