Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him), who saw and heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at the time of the Prophet’s passing Sahl was 15 years old, narrated that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that the verdict “water (semen) for water (obligatory bath)” which people used to give, was a concession that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted in the early days of Islam, but later he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered to perform ghusl (ritual bath). Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Another narrator said: Imam Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The one whom I prefer narrated this hadith to me from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 781)
That is: In the early period of Islam, it was permitted that after intercourse, if ejaculation did not occur, if semen did not come out, then ritual bath (ghusl) was not obligatory. But later, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded that whether semen is discharged or not, ritual bath becomes obligatory due to penetration, as will be mentioned in the following hadith.
Therefore, the hadith «الماء من الماء» is abrogated, but some scholars have interpreted it as referring to a wet dream (i.e., nocturnal emission), as has been mentioned.
